Apart from the transfor from the Medical

Department of Overseers, Disinfecting Station Engineers, Cleansing Chargemen, and Cleansing Coolies, a considerable reduction in staff amounting to 208 posts has been effected. This is the result of re-organisation of the supervision of sanitary squads and the introduction of mechanical devices. This reduction in menial staff is offset to some extent by an increase of 20 posts of Motor Driver which will be required for further vehicles to be purchased during the coming year. The opportunity has buon taken to show all classes of monial labour under the generic title of Sanitary Coolies. The reduction in personal emoluments amounts to $49,564.

Other Charges show an increase of $233,500 partly because a new provision of $120,000 is required for re-settlement of squatters, and $10,000 for a trial scheme of rural anitation. The greater use of mechanical sanitation equipment is reflected in the provision of an extra $50,000 for upkeep of vehicles.

Under Special Expenditure a further stage in the programme of re-equipping this department with motor and sca transport is provided for. The expenditure compared with 1943-49 is nearly $100,000 more but this is entirely accounted for by an additional $100,000 for nightsoil barges. Expenditure on the Head shows a nett increase of $270,886.
